Statistics gathered in 2015 suggest that over 23,600 children in the UK are bereaved of a parent each year, through illness, accident, murder & suicide.

In 2015 there were 359,960 new cases of cancer. Many of those diagnosed with cancer are parents, grandparents, siblings and other important people in the lives of children and young people.

During the course of your work it is likely you will come into contact with a child living with the impact of a life limiting illness within their family or a child who has been bereaved.

Children & young people’s worlds may be shattered when someone close to them is seriously ill or has died. Their ability to cope and their overall resilience will be influenced by a number of factors, including the nature of illness, the circumstances of the death, family relationships, the age of the child and the responses of people around them.

The day is suitable for professionals who support children & young people in a variety of settings, including health, education and social care.

To enable participants to understand the impact of serious illness and bereavement on children and young people and to feel more confident when supporting them.
