Group Support

A core part of our service, we invite children and their families to meet with others who have been affected by similar circumstances at specialist group events. These events are run throughout the year and form a valuable part of an ongoing programme of therapeutic support.

This support is typically only offered for children and young people who are preparing for the loss or have been bereaved of a parent, carer or sibling.

Our events for children and young people bring groups of a similar age together, helping them to see that they are not on their own and that there are others who are facing similar experiences. Being with others encourages them to talk and to re-engage. The events are fun and upbeat, and can help children to understand that it is still ok to laugh, smile, and have fun.

We also offer group events for parents and carers which give an opportunity to share and learn from one another’s experiences. Find out more about the range of groups we offer below.

Remembering Someone Special

This is a small group aimed for children who have either no memories or very limited memories of their parent. We offer the children two sessions where we focus on feelings of grief, loneliness and identity, as well as acknowledging how confusing it is for children when they are grieving for a parent they didn’t really know.

We also have a follow up coffee morning session for the parents of the children who attended the session. This group is usually aimed at primary school children.

Children’s Therapeutic Day

We provide a therapeutic group session at Ufton Court for children aged 7-12 years old who have been bereaved by the death of a parent.  These sessions run three times a year.  The day offers an opportunity for the children to meet peers who are bereaved, remembering their parent and sharing their experiences; what they find difficult and what helps them through their grief.  The day provides a balance of sharing their loss, playing in the natural environment at Ufton Court together and easing feelings of social isolation. The children also have lots of fun!

Art Group

During each school holiday we provide an arts and crafts session for children of all ages to join us at Daisy’s Dream and get crafting!  Family members are welcome to stay and join the fun.  This can also provide a gentle way for children new to Daisy’s Dream to meet our Therapeutic Practitioners and other bereaved children.

SAFE: Sibling Group

We hold a regular six weekly group for children and Young People who have been bereaved by the death of a sibling.  The group explores their grief and how hard life is presently as they navigate day to day without their brother or sister.  We also spend time crafting, playing games and having fun.  This group is supportive and helpful for children and Young People to listen and spend time with each other, who know just how hard their grief is.

As part of our ongoing sibling support group, we recently invited the children to help rename the group, giving them ownership and allowing the name to reflect how the sessions make them feel. Together, they came up with SAFE, a meaningful acronym that stands for Sharing, Acceptance, Friendship, and Empathy.

SAFE: Parents Group

This group is specifically aimed for parents who have experienced the death of their child.  Meeting parents in person, helps to share their feelings of grief and loss in a supportive environment at Daisy’s Dream.  Our sessions are held every two months.
