On Sunday 5th May, a team of intrepid volunteers from ESP – a Berkshire-based IT support solutions company – battled their way through mud, iced water and electric shocks to complete the London West Tough Mudder. Run over 10 miles with 25 challenging obstacles along its path, the Tough Mudder is an endurance event that is not for the faint-hearted. However, it’s designed to be run as a team, helping each other along the way, which makes for a more enjoyable and motivating event for everyone involved.

The team was put together by Mike Harling, ESP Chairman, who – as well as being a keen sportsman and fitness fanatic – has driven intra-company support of local charities since setting up ESP nearly 27 years ago. However, there is a particular reason the charity receiving ESP’s support this year - Daisy’s Dream – were nominated, as Mike explains:

“I co-founded ESP in 1992 with my childhood friend, Darren Richardson. When Darren lost his tragic fight against cancer last year, a local charity, Daisy’s Dream provided incredible bereavement support to his family. When it came to choosing a charity to receive ESP’s support in 2019, it was an easy decision to make both for the phenomenal work they do and to honour Darren’s memory.

So far this year we have already completed the Green Park Challenge and Reading Half Marathon and our next event is the Welsh 3000s Challenge, where you are required to walk to the top of all of the 15 mountains over 3000 ft in Wales within the space of 24 hours, without using any form of transport. I am grateful for the enthusiasm and team spirit of all the ESP participants, who have – between them – already raised more than the £5,000 target we set ourselves for the whole year.”
